We are a little bit lucky here in NYC. We do not have the two most damaging termite species, the drywood termite and the Formosan termite. But we still have fast feeding termite species that is increasingly common here in the region – the eastern subterranean termite.
Eastern subterranean termite feed at an incredible speed – although it may not sound like much at first glance. Within a 6 month period, they will eat the equivalent of about 2.5 feet of a 2×4.
“Only 2.5 feet in 6 months? That’s not a lot” you might say. You would be wrong.
2.5 feet of one board would not be very much. But they do not eat one board. Termites eat a very small amount of the wood all over your home, typically feeding on the smaller grains and spreading around the same way ants do in order to make paths that they can travel through. 2 feet of wood ends up being as much as dozens of boards, requiring all of them to be replaced and leaving a host of other damage (like paint peeling and damaged drywall) in its wake.
This damage is substantial, and it occurs quickly and often in ways you do not notice. That is why it is so important to get a termite inspection at least annually.
