Allergies and Pests – Sneezing Season is Pest Season

It’s allergy season. Many of us are sneezing frequently, struggling with runny noses, watery eyes, and many, many other challenges. The allergies this year in some parts of the country are some of the worst they’ve ever been, and we’re getting hit hard here as well.

Most people aren’t thinking about pest control during allergy season. But perhaps you should. That is because allergy season and pest season are linked in many, many ways, and if you’re sneezing from allergies, you may strongly need to consider pest control as well.

The Many Links Between Allergies and Insects

In most cases, which we’ll address a little bit in a moment, bugs and allergies are mostly unrelated. After all, most people do not sneeze when they’re around spiders or cough when they’re around ants. But there are still many links to consider:

  • Cockroaches Cause Allergies – One thing many people forget is that allergies are not always caused by pollen. In fact, one of the leading causes of indoor allergies is the presence of cockroaches, as their oil and skin is a very common allergen. If you’re having unexplained allergies indoors, it’s always a good idea to have pest control come just in case.
  • Pollen Season is Pest Season – Perhaps the primary reason for pest control during allergy season is that allergy season *means* the launch of pest season. Pests are coming out most when plants are growing, weather is warming, and the flowers open, so you know that if you’re struggling with allergies then pests are emerging as well. Many of these pests are also hungry from being dormant all year, aiding to the likelihood they come indoors.
  • Allergies Indoors Means Pests Indoors – Do you find yourself sneezing indoors? That’s a problem as well. Sneezing indoors is often a sign that you have air leaks, because allergens should, at least in theory, stay outside. While it is possible to bring allergies with you if you head outside, those that find they are sneezing indoors often may also be at higher risk of pests.

With the exception of cockroaches, the risk of pests during allergy season isn’t necessarily more allergies. But it is what allergy season represents, and why – if you find yourself sneezing often – you should also consider making sure your property is best free.
